Description

***YOU MUST BE BILINGUAL IN SPANISH IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR THIS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY***

Service Description: Must be bilingual for this volunteer position. Alongside Alvernia DPT faculty and students, volunteers will perform a virtual health screen by aiding in the interpretation of questions and meeting with Health Screening Team prior. After the health screen, volunteers will consolidate and compile data into an Excel sheet for further assessment.

Students may also choose to continuing to serve beyond this experience by participating on the Health Screening Team and potential to serve as social support with residents.

Background: The Reading Housing Authority (RHA) is a Pennsylvania Public Housing Agency that serves the housing needs for residents of the City of Reading who otherwise would be unable to afford decent and safe housing. Residents within the RHA are at a higher risk for poor health outcomes due to associated social determinants of health, and they would benefit from screening and education to improve overall wellness.

As technology continues to develop, telehealth allows individuals to contact healthcare professionals via phone or video chat. Given the uncertainty of Covid-19, interprofessional collaboration through telehealth can provide an avenue for resident education and screening, as well as identifying at-risk residents and creating wellness routines. The goal of this real world learning experience is to engage Alvernia students and volunteers in providing inter-professional screening, health promotion and disease prevention programming to residents of Reading Housing Authority.

This data will be used to develop discipline-specific wellness and intervention plans based on the assessment data.
