Description

Please see attached photo of my SEARCH students in their weeks-long service-learning project. Today, my class visited "Threads for Success" at Governor Mifflin High School. After talking about clothing waste as part of the climate crisis while reading 1001 Voices we decided to focus on this project collectively. It is estimated that the fashion industry is responsible for 2 to 8 per cent of global CO2 emissions – greater than all international flights, maritime and shipping combined. Its water consumption statistics are even more shocking, with around 215 trillion liters of water being consumed by the industry each year.

We then looked in our direct community and learned that Governor Mifflin High School is second highest in Berks County for students experiencing homelessness. Ashley Berg is the school social worker -- her caseload is 1500 students and 100+ students currently are without housing and basic need items. The Alvernia freshman students organized and collected clothing items from friends and family and took inventory this past Monday. As a collective we collected 600 articles of clothing that will immediately be put to use. My students went home and had the conversation about collecting items for those in need and climate - a win win for sure.
