2023 Spring Semester
SW 290/C/01 - ST Advocacy & Activism Fundamentals Credits 3.0
In 2020, civil right leader and former congressman John Lewis encouraged others to join him in the fight for social justice and “the soul of America.” “Speak up, speak out, get in the way,” he said. “Get in good trouble, necessary trouble.” This course explores the theory, practice, and tactics of activism, focusing on creating real-world change. Students will match their passion with movements and organizations working to make a difference. The course will include material regarding social movements, non-violent civil resistance campaigns, political campaigns, targeting the policy process (local, state, and federal), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), participatory action research, and community organizing. As a service-learning course, the student will exercise the skills learned and engage in direct action on the issue or with the organization of their choice.
